Anna Zimmerman

b. 1986
Sweden

Born in Norrköping, Sweden, Anna Zimmerman is an emerging artist that has firmly established herself on the contemporary art scene. Zimmerman has has studied at prestigious institutions such as Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm (Fine Art, 2017 - 2020) and the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm (Individual Artistic Work, 2019). Despite her young age, Zimmerman has already made significant strides in her career, with her works part of the esteemed Norrköping Art Museum collection.

Zimmerman’s artistry is distinguished by her use of advanced charcoal techniques, producing photorealistic drawings that often feature young women in intricate, historical attire. Her works are reminiscent of the 18th-century painter Alexander Roslin (1718 – 1793), known for his meticulous portraits and fabric depictions. This historical influence, however, is contrasted with contemporary elements, as Zimmerman portrays young women in modern attire such as leather jackets and long, lacquered nails, thus grounding her work firmly in the present.

Zimmerman’s work explores the parallels between past and present, creating a dialogue between different eras through her detailed and emotionally charged compositions. Her meticulous technique in charcoal is both time-consuming and technically demanding, placing her in the lineage of renowned photorealistic Swedish artists like Gunnel Wåhlstrand (born 1974); Martina Müntzing (born 1968), Maria Nordin (born 1980) and Karin Broos (born 1950).

Zimmerman has previously participated in the following group exhibitions: Spring exhibition, Dômen School of Art, Gothenburg, Sweden (2016); Graduation exhibition, Dômen School of Art, Gothenburg, Sweden (2017); BFA1 Gallery, Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm (2017); Mellanland (with Evelina Nolin), Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm (2018); Om fotografi, Centrum för fotografi, Stockholm (2018); Planket, Stockholm (2018); Artist’s books, HangmanProjects, Stockholm (2018); FiNiSSAGE - 2nd year fine art, Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm (2019); Studie av Ljud och Ljus (prolog), Royal College of Music, Stockholm (2019); Bortom fotografi, Strindbergmuseet, Stockholm (2019); Artist in retreat (with David Zimmerman), Blekinge museum, Karlskrona, Sweden (2019); Studie av Ljud och Ljus, Tampere, Finland (2020); Spring exhibition, digital show at www.konstfack2020.se (2020); BFA degree exhibition, Konsthall C, Stockholm (2020) and Bländningar, Galleri Skomakeriet, Stockholm (2022).
