Leonor Fini – Work from the collection on loan to SCHIRN Frankfurt
We are delighted that Leonor Fini’s Portrait de Meret Oppenheim, from the Firestorm Foundation collection, is part of Leonor Fini, the artist’s first major retrospective in Germany, opening at SCHIRN Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
The exhibition brings together around 100 works spanning Fini’s remarkable career and will later travel to the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.
The exhibition explores her distinctive world of myth, fantasy and transformation, and her enduring challenge to conventional ideas of femininity and identity.

We are proud to see this work from the Firestorm Foundation collection included in this landmark exhibition celebrating one of the most singular voices of her time.
Leonor Fini’s powerful painting Portrait de Meret Oppenheim bears witness to the meeting of two extraordinary 20th century artists. Painted in 1938, it was executed at the height of Fini’s powers. Fini had just been included in the pivotal exhibition Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (in 1936), and was also represented by the New York-based gallerist, and champion of Surrealist art, Julien Levy (who later gave Dorothea Tanning two solo exhibitions in 1944 and 1948). In 1937 she had also designed the iconic bottle, and packaging, of Elsa Schiaparelli’s (1890 – 1973) perfume Shocking, based on the shape of Mae West’s (1893 – 1980, American actress, singer, comedian, screenwriter, playwright, and sex symbol whose career spanned over seven decades) torso.
